How it works

What is peer to peer file sharing?

Peer to peer file sharing is a method of sharing files between individuals or groups of individuals. It allows users to share files with others without the need for any third party.

Do both parties need to be online at the same time?

Yes. Both parties need to be online at the same time.

Do I need an account to use RelayShare?

To send a file you need to have an account. But guests can use transfer tokens that you send to them without an account.

How does it work?

RelayShare uses WebRTC to establish a secure connection between two parties. Once a connection is established, the two parties can communicate directly without the need for any third party. The connection is encrypted using WebRTC's DTLS protocol. You can send a file directly to one of your contacts or send a link to someone that contains a token to a file.

Are there any limits?

There are no limits to the number of files that can be shared. There is however a limit to the amount of data your device can handle at a time. Webrtc would require ram to process the transfer on the receiving side. Therefore in your settings you can set limits to the size of file you can receive to avoid running out of ram on your device. The default limit is 500MB at a time. Guest users cannot change this limit.

Are files stored on the server?

No. Files are not stored on the server. Instead, RelayShare uses WebRTC to establish a secure connection between two parties. Once a connection is established, the two parties can communicate directly. We have no knowledge of the content of the files. Therefore, RelayShare does not store any files on the server or process any of the files contents.
